About Programme

The Bachelor of Journalism and Communication (Honours) (BJC) programme of our College is the first 4-year undergraduate programme in Hong Kong that converges Business, Journalism, Public Relations and Corporate Communication in its curriculum. The programme strikes a balance between theory and practical training. It offers local and overseas internship opportunities as well as exchange programmes to students with a view to broadening their horizons and enhancing their critical thinking, creativity and presentation skills. We strive to foster students to become communication professionals in the fields of Business Journalism and Corporate Communication. There are two concentrations in the BJC programme:

  • Business Journalism Concentration
  • Corporate Communication Concentration

Career Prospects and Education Pathways

  • Graduates of the programme may take up jobs such as Internet and TV reporters, news anchors, news analysts, financial news analysts, editors, TV program producers, post-production practitioners, news translators, news cameramen, and media administrators, as well as financial public relations officers, public relations officers, public relations and communication consultants, project managers, communication policy analysts, communication strategy consultants and marketing executives.
  • Graduates of the programme may pursue further study locally or overseas. For example, they may study master’s degree programmes in relevant disciplines such as journalism, mass communication, corporate communication and public relations, financial or political communication, cross-cultural communication, etc.

Programme Objectives

  1. Competence in professional communication in English, Chinese and other forms of communication;
  2. State-of-the-art knowledge of theories and principles in journalism and communication from regional and intercultural perspectives;
  3. Critical and creative abilities in analysing the complexities of media and applying theories to various contexts, especially business context;
  4. Competence in converged communication skills in business communication and corporate communication;
  5. A strong sense of social responsibility and high commitment to professional ethics.

Programme Intended Learning Outcomes

Upon Completion of the programme, students should be able to:

  1. Communicate appropriately and effectively in both spoken and written forms in English and Putonghua at a level competent for general communication, especially in a business context;
  2. Command fundamental journalism and communication theories and principles;
  3. Understand corporate communication functions such as internal and external communication, media relations, customer service and corporate identity development;
  4. Demonstrate a global perspective and an understanding of cultural diversity, as evidenced by an understanding of globalisation, the dimensions along which cultures vary and the implications of both for business;
  5. Demonstrate the ability to conduct research, gather information, synthesise and analyse data and present relevant news or persuasive information at a professional level;
  6. Have the ability to make independent judgment on social, cultural and business issues in local community and Greater China;
  7. Think critically, creatively and independently; evaluate their own work and the work of others for accuracy, fairness, clarity, and correctness;
  8. Apply IT technologies appropriate for the production, editing and presentation of visual, aural, textual or other media content;
  9. Be an ethical professional who understands the legal implications, considerations and practices of the media and business professions and assumes a strong sense of social responsibility.
