New Student Orientation 2021 of School of Communication

30 August 2021

When the countdown reached zero, there was a burst of welcome greetings from all teachers of the School of Communication (SCOM) to the new students admitted in 2021/22.The School session of New Student Orientation 2021 then began with a wave of warm regards from the entire School given to all the newcomers who joined the event.

Due to the COVID-19 pandemic and the social distancing measures in place, the School session of New Student Orientation 2021 was held online via live broadcast at the SCOM Cinema and TV Production Centre (formerly SCOM TV Studio) on 17 August and 30 August 2021 for the School’s senior-year entrants and first-year entrants respectively. There were more than 150 new students who participated in the activity.

Professor Scarlet Tso, Associate Vice-President (Communications and Public Affairs) and Dean of School of Communication, delivered a heartfelt welcome speech and shared with freshmen words of encouragement. While emphasising that the School was in full support of students’ learning journeys at HSUHK, she urged students to avoid becoming complacent and remarked that the identity of “university student” was only meaningful if a proper attitude in learning and life was held. She hoped that students would take pride in being a SCOM student today, and the School shall be proud of them tomorrow.

To help students transition to the life at HSUHK better, the School’s Academic Advisor for Students, Programme Directors, Associate Programme Directors and teachers of the BJC and BA-CMCT programmes explained to students in detail the essential information pertaining to studying at the University, including but not limited to the respective study plans and graduation requirements of the two programmes, the University and the School’s Academic Regulations, module registration, and the School’s Summer Internship Programme, etc.

Apart from sharing from teachers, two senior students of the School were invited to join the live event to share with freshmen their experience and advice on their studies, University life and career planning. They advised freshmen not to be afraid of learning new things. In face of difficulties, as long as they take the initiative to seek help, there will always be someone around from the School willing to lend a helping hand. The President of Students’ Association of Journalism and Communication (SAJC) also took the opportunity to greet the new students and introduce to them SAJC’s work and its upcoming activities.

The School session ended in a creative group photo where students showed their faces online on a TV set with all teachers of the School standing behind them, as they always will.
