Hong Kong is striving to accelerate its development as an international education hub and establish the “Study in Hong Kong” brand. In an interview on the SCOM Talk Show of the School of Communication, Professor Joshua Mok, the new President of The Hang Seng University of Hong Kong, emphasised that internationalisation and diversification should be central to this development, with private universities playing a greater role.

He urged the Government to streamline academic programme accreditation procedures for private universities and reduce the time required for approval. This would give private universities greater flexibility to develop innovative programmes that respond to evolving societal needs.

Regarding the development of the Northern Metropolis University Town, Mok said that, in addition to strengthening capabilities in science and technology, it is equally important to incorporate arts, culture, and sustainable blue-green development into its planning. He also stressed that private universities should be encouraged to participate in the initiative in ways that reflect their respective disciplinary strengths.

Mok also offered a note of caution regarding Hong Kong’s growing appeal as a study destination amid global geopolitical uncertainties. He emphasised that international student recruitment should be pursued in a systematic and measured manner to safeguard the reputation and credibility of the “Study in Hong Kong” brand.

The School of Communication of The Hang Seng University of Hong Kong (HSUHK) is commitment to experiential learning and community engagement while nurturing socially conscious, empathetic, and responsible communicators. Recently, the School collaborated with The Salvation Army to organize a life and death education workshop on campus. Through professional sharing and intergenerational dialogue, the workshop provided students with a unique opportunity to explore those often-overlooked topics, including the value of life, ageing, end-of-life planning, and compassionate care, in a meaningful and engaging way.

The workshop commenced with a keynote presentation by Ms. Shirley Wong, Service Supervisor of The Salvation Army. She highlighted the growing significance of advance care planning, compassionate communities, and public education in promoting dignity and quality of life among the ageing population. Ms. Wong introduced the latest developments in palliative and end-of-life care in Hong Kong and outlined the work of The Salvation Army’s “Palliative Care for the Elderly” Programme. Students gained a deeper understanding of holistic care, which addresses the physical, psychological, social, spiritual, and environmental needs of older adults facing serious illness and the final stages of life.

Ms. Wong also emphasized that life and death education is not a one-time discussion but a continuous process of learning and reflection. Through examples drawn from community projects and public engagement initiatives, she demonstrated how individuals can be encouraged to review their life journeys, express their wishes, and engage in open conversations about end-of-life matters with family members and loved ones. Students were introduced to important concepts such as life review, fulfilling personal aspirations, advance planning, and the “Four Messages of Life” – expressing love, gratitude, apology, and farewell. These insights challenged common misconceptions surrounding death and loss, helping students recognize that discussing mortality can be an important step toward living more meaningfully and purposefully.

The workshop was further enriched by the participation of several professionally trained senior volunteers from The Salvation Army. Adding a personal and human dimension to the discussions, the volunteers shared their experiences of ageing, their preparations for the future, and the importance of communicating end-of-life preferences with family members. Their stories reflected resilience, wisdom, and a positive approach to later life, offering students valuable perspectives beyond those typically found in textbooks or classrooms.

In the second part of the workshop, students had the opportunity to interact directly with the senior volunteers through a series of experiential booths designed and facilitated by them. Through games, cultural activities, and informal conversations, the workshop fostered a valuable platform for intergenerational exchange. Students actively participated in discussions, raising thoughtful questions and gaining insights into the diverse experiences and perspectives of older adults. The exchanges not only deepened their understanding of life and death education but also nurtured empathy, respect, and appreciation for the contributions of the elderly within the community.

As future communication professionals, students are often expected to engage with sensitive social issues and diverse community groups. Through a combination of professional expertise, lived experiences, and heartfelt intergenerational interactions, the workshop encouraged students to reflect on the meaning of life, the importance of preparation, and the value of open dialogue. It provided more than knowledge of palliative care and life and death education; it also cultivated critical thinking, compassion, interpersonal communication skills, and social awareness. By connecting classroom learning with real-life experiences, the activity broadened students’ understanding of human dignity, care, and community responsibility.

The School of Communication at The Hang Seng University of Hong Kong (HSUHK) successfully held the “Al Creativity, Ethics, and Interdisciplinarity: A Symposium on Empowering Arts and Culture Communication through Generative AI” on 2–3 October 2026. Scholars and industry experts from Finland, the United States, Mainland China, and Hong Kong gathered in Hong Kong to explore the opportunities and challenges facing the arts and cultural communication sector in the age of artificial intelligence. The symposium was conducted in a hybrid format (both online and offline), with participation exceeding 200 attendees.

Prof. Scarlet Tso, Dean of the School of Communication, remarked that the symposium focused on how artificial intelligence can empower arts and cultural communication. This initiative aligns with the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region Government’s goal of accelerating the development of Hong Kong as a global centre for cultural and artistic exchange. It also reflects the School’s vision of advancing teaching and research in arts and cultural communication. Prof. Tso affirmed that the School of Communication will continue its mission by engaging with experts and scholars to contribute to future development in this field.

In his opening remarks, Prof. David Tse, Acting Provost and Vice-President (Academic and Research) of HSUHK, stated, “In this era of transformation, generative artificial intelligence has become a powerful and ubiquitous force, reshaping how humanity creates, understands, and transmits culture.” He emphasised that while technology breaks down barriers and creates new possibilities, significant challenges that must be addressed also emerge. He further noted, “The ethical and creative application of artificial intelligence is not a hindrance to progress but a fundamental basis for advancing further.”

Prof. Andrés Lucero, Associate Professor of Interaction Design at the Department of Art and Media, Aalto University, highlighted the role of artificial intelligence as a collaborative partner in the creative process, rather than a mere substitute. He explained that the synergy between humans and AI can inspire greater possibilities in design and artistic practices.

Prof. CHEN Changfeng, Dean of the School of International Communication at Jinan University and Professor at Tsinghua University, noted that generative AI is transforming creativity into a new form of intelligent infrastructure, fundamentally reshaping the models of artistic creation and cultural communication.

The symposium provided a comprehensive examination of the unprecedented opportunities generative AI brings to arts, culture, and communication, while also addressing significant challenges in areas such as creative ethics, copyright ownership, educational transformations, and cultural governance. The discussion underscored the necessity for continuous dialogue and collaboration among academia, industry, and research sectors.

Dr. Cheung met with Prof. Scarlet Tso (Dean of SCOM), Dr. Chan Chi Kit (Director of the Master of Arts in Entertainment Media Management and Communication), and Dr. Janice Wong (Senior Lecturer of SCOM) to engage in an insightful discussion on the latest trends and developments in the dynamic world of entertainment media management and communication.

During the meeting, Dr. Cheung—a renowned media professional and advocate for the creative industry—shared his valuable insights on the evolving trends in entertainment media and the growing market demand for skilled professionals in this field, underscoring the significance of this industry’s role in shaping the broader cultural and business landscapes.

The meeting covered a range of topics integral to the Master of Arts in Entertainment Media Management and Communication (MA-EMMC) programme offered by SCOM, targeting both academic and professional growth in this field:

Market Potential: Dr. Cheung highlighted the rapidly expanding career opportunities for graduates specialising in entertainment media management and communication, including roles in event management, film distribution, digital marketing, corporate communications, and content creation for both traditional and digital platforms.

Dr. Peter Cheung visited Martin Ka Shing Lee Innovation Lab

The School of Communication held its second Orientation session, the New Chapter Ceremony, on September 24, 2026, welcoming over 100 non-local undergraduate freshmen. Themed “Empowering a Journey to a Brighter Future,” the event aimed to help students understand university life, explore their study programmes, and learn about available resources and support. The goal was to boost their sense of belonging, help them adapt quickly, and set a strong foundation for their future.

Professor Scarlet TSO, Dean of the School of Communication, delivered an inspiring speech encouraging students to study hard and actively participate in school activities to broaden their horizons. She stressed the importance of self-expression, an open mindset, and critical thinking to better distinguish right from wrong. With communication technologies evolving rapidly, she urged students to use artificial intelligence to tell engaging stories and confidently express themselves. The School values effective communication, emphasizes building strong interpersonal connections, and is dedicated to preparing students to become outstanding communication professionals ready to engage globally. Professor TSO also reminded students to fully utilize campus resources and enjoy a vibrant campus life.

This year’s orientation focused on six key themes: “Class Attendance is Essential,” “Take IELTS Early and Reap the Benefits,” “Internships are Valuable Opportunities,” “Participate in School Activities – Broaden Your Horizons and Earn SCOM Hours,” “Your Personal Tutor is Your Strongest Support,” and “Joining the Big Family with Inclusivity.” The event emphasized the importance of regular attendance to stay eligible for exams and graduate on time. It encouraged students to register early for the IELTS and to take internships that link theory with practice to boost employability. A senior student who joined this summer’s internship program also shared their experiences and insights. Additionally, the School offers talks, seminars, exchange programs, company visits, and competitions to support students’ all-rounded development and help them earn the SCOM Hours required for internships.

Each student was assigned a Personal Tutor to provide individual guidance on academic planning, course selection, overseas exchanges, and internships. Tutors actively engaged with freshmen during the event, creating an inclusive and supportive “big family” atmosphere. Senior students shared how strong student–teacher relationships boosted their sense of belonging and enhanced their learning. The orientation ended successfully with group discussions and a tour of the School’s facilities, giving freshmen clear direction for their university journey and laying a solid foundation for their academic and personal growth, empowering them to build a bright future.

During the group discussion session, the teachers responsible for each programme explained to the new students the programme features, study plans, module registration, and graduation requirements.

The annual Internship Introductory Briefing Session of the School of Communication was successfully held on September 17, attracting nearly 100 enthusiastic third-year students from the School’s three undergraduate programmes — Journalism and Communication, Convergent Media and Communication Technology, and Arts and Culture Communication. The event aimed to provide students with a comprehensive understanding of the importance of internships, detailed explanations of the application procedures, selection criteria, and internship matching arrangements, helping them to prepare thoroughly and smoothly transition from academic studies to the workplace.

Due to the large number of participants this year, the School arranged for faculty members responsible for different disciplines to conduct group discussions with students. This allowed students to engage in in-depth exchanges about internship opportunities specific to their respective fields, further enhancing their understanding of internship work. The faculty consistently emphasized the importance of students developing the habit of regularly checking their emails, beginning to prepare their CVs and portfolios early, and cultivating a strong awareness of current news. In addition, students must ensure they accumulate enough School of Communication activity hours (SCOM Hours) to meet the internship application requirements and actively prepare for the group interviews scheduled for early December.

The entire briefing session was both lively and informative, laying a solid foundation for students’ future internship journeys. It inspired them to seize valuable practical opportunities to enhance their professional skills and workplace competitiveness.

Generative Artificial Intelligence (GenAI) is among the most transformative technological advancements, presenting substantial opportunities and challenges for individuals and organisations. However, the widespread adoption of GenAI raises critical questions regarding its creative application, ethical considerations, and the need to balance risks and benefits – particularly in the domains of arts and culture communication, which involves the strategic management of the communication process about arts and culture content and industries.

In Hong Kong, the arts, culture and creative industries have gained significant momentum. Now, Hong Kong is home to over 1,000 arts groups that host approximately 8,000 performances annually, attracting more than 3 million spectators. Hong Kong is also one of the world’s most significant art auction markets. International events such as the Hong Kong Arts Festival and Art Basel bring together top global artists and galleries, showcasing diverse cultures and creativity.

Aligning with these initiatives, the School of Communication at Hang Seng University of Hong Kong launched the Bachelor of Arts (Honours) in Arts and Culture Communication programme in 2024. In the era of AI, this programme plans to develop new knowledge, creative skills, and ethical frameworks for integrating AI as a meaningful and effective tool in teaching and creative communication. As more and more students and educators engage in the use of GenAI applications, it is essential to carefully balance the risks and benefits of integrating AI into creative and cultural industries while advancing teaching and learning in higher education.

Hence, the School of Communication at The Hang Seng University of Hong Kong organises the “Al Creativity, Ethics, and Interdisciplinarity: A Symposium on Empowering Arts and Culture Communication through Generative AI”, bringing together academic and industry experts from Finland, the United States, Mainland China, and Hong Kong for a two-day interdisciplinary international symposium in Hong Kong. The program features two keynote speeches and four parallel sessions. Discussion themes include: (1) Generative AI empowering arts and culture communication: reshaping creativity and global engagement; (2) Generative AI–driven transformation in communication education: ethics and literacy building; (3) Generative AI steering innovation in the art, culture, and media industries; and (4) Interdisciplinary integration of generative AI: opportunities, methods, and reflections. The symposium aims to share cutting-edge research and practical insights, foster academic collaboration and innovation, and encourage participants to integrate the conference outcomes into their teaching and research.

The Rotary Club of Sagacity Hong Kong delegation visited the School of Communication at The Hang Seng University of Hong Kong (HSUHK) on 14 September 2026. The delegation was warmly received by Prof. Scarlet Tso, Dean of the School of Communication, who took the opportunity to introduce the history of HSUHK and the School of Communication.

Leading the delegation was the President of the Rotary Club of Sagacity Hong Kong, Mr. Kenneth Chan, an alumnus of Hang Seng School of Commerce. During the visit, Mr. Chan expressed his heartfelt sentiments, stating: “From Hang Seng School of Commerce, which was deeply rooted in business education in its early days, to the most advanced private university in Hong Kong today, I am filled with boundless emotion and pride as I witness my alma mater’s leap forward and remarkable achievements!”

The delegation’s visit included a discussion with Prof. Scarlet Tso, a guided tour of the School of Communication’s state-of-the-art facilities such as the Cinema and Television Production Centre, and the Martin Ka Shing Lee Innovation Lab. The Rotary Club of Sagacity Hong Kong delegation visited Martin Ka Shing Lee Innovation Lab.

The “HADO Sports & Entertainment Carnival 2026,” organised by HADO Hong Kong, was held on 13 September 2026 at Graham Hall, Central. With the theme “Sports × Technology × Entertainment,” the event attracted around 150 participants, including representatives from the business and education sectors, community leaders, young people, parents, and sports enthusiasts.  Together, they experience the innovative HADO electronic dodgeball and explored the development potential of emerging technology-powered sports. The School of Communication (SCOM) at The Hang Seng University of Hong Kong (HSUHK) became one of the supporting organisations of this innovative event for the first time, with around 10 teachers and students participating.  This initiative seeks to bring this wave of innovation into the community and inspire broader interest and involvement in the intersections of technology, sports, media, and communication.

Professor Scarlet Tso, Dean of SCOM, shared her insights into the development of emerging sports in Hong Kong from ta communication perspective.  She discussed how education, public experience, and cross-sector collaboration can enhance society’s awareness of and participation in technology sports. Professor Tso highlighted that modern communication is not merely about disseminating information but, more importantly, about creating experiences that audiences are willing to engage in, feel personally involved with, and even actively share — and HADO is a prime example. A match lasting just a few minutes can generate rich stories of tension, teamwork, comebacks, cheering, and personal breakthroughs.  These moments can be transformed into short videos, photos, and social media content. She hopes that students from SCOM can reflect on how best to introduce HADO to those unfamiliar with it, translating “AR technology” into compelling and accessible stories. Using mediums such as short videos, live streaming, campus media, or innovative event design, they can encourage more people to transition from passive viewers to active participants. Additionally, she emphasised the importance of leveraging technology to create more engaging and story-driven activities that connect with people on a deeper level.

Dr. Chan Chi Kit, Programme Director of the Master of Arts in Entertainment Media Management and Communication (MA-EMMC) at the School of Communication, elaborated further on the significance of entertainment media management as a discipline focused on the realm of the “Attention Economy.” This programme emphasises the strategies and methods necessary to effectively capture and engage audiences’ attention within the increasingly competitive entertainment industry.

Dr. Chan highlighted that in today’s media landscape, audience attention has become a highly valuable resource. The ability to attract and sustain this attention is unquestionably one of the key factors driving success in the entertainment sector. The MA-EMMC aims to equip students with a comprehensive understanding of relevant theories while simultaneously enhancing their professional expertise in practical applications, thereby laying a solid foundation for future development within the fields of entertainment and media management.

In addition to the highlight event, the “2026 HADO Electronic Dodgeball World Championship Hong Kong Regional Qualifying Tournament,” the carnival also featured individual and team HADO experiences, Artbat Digital Painting Performance, and several interactive sports education booths. Participants , regardless of age or prior sports experience, were able to engage in HADO’s dynamic gameplay, which cultivates skills such as observation, communication, teamwork, and on-the-spot decision-making.

A special feature of the event was a HADO charity match, where representatives from the SCOM at HSUHK and the Rotary Club of Sagacity Hong Kong participated in a friendly competition and exchange. It used sports to foster connections among the education, business, and community sectors, and demonstrating the possibilities of technology sports in promoting social engagement and cross-sector collaboration.

HADO is an innovative technology sport that combines augmented reality (AR) technology, focusing on challenging participants’ reaction speed, strategic thinking, and teamwork. Participants wear AR-equipped headsets along with arm sensors to engage in real-time 3-on-3 battles in a physical venue, firing energy balls and setting up shields for exciting competitive confrontations. Since its launch in 2016, HADO has successfully expanded to more than 40 countries and regions worldwide, with over 10 million cumulative players.

The School of Communication (SCOM) held its first New Student Orientation session on 10 September 2026, warmly welcoming undergraduate freshmen of the 2026/27 academic year, with around 80 students participating. Themed “Empowering Your Journey to a Brighter Future,” the event aimed to help new students build confidence and equip themselves with diverse skills, laying a strong foundation for their university journey and future career development. As the day coincided with Teachers’ Day, the students took the opportunity to express their festive greetings to their teachers, creating a warm atmosphere.

Professor Scarlet Tso, Dean of the School of Communication, delivered a warm welcome speech at the event. She encouraged freshmen to maintain a curious mind, cultivate critical thinking skills, embrace challenges, and view mistakes as opportunities for growth. Professor Tso also emphasised the importance of interpersonal connections in today’s fast-evolving digital era, urging students to make the best use of innovative tools such as AI, while actively expanding their networks. She encouraged the freshmen to fully enjoy their university life and concluded with an inspiring message: “Today you are proud of the School of Communication; tomorrow the School of Communication will be proud of you!”

The School prepared six “success kits” to freshmen at the Orientation, covering the topics that students care most about: “Attending Classes,” “Taking IELTS,” “Participating in Summer Internships,” “School Activities,” “Personal Tutor,” and “Being part of the Big Family.” The initiative aimed to equip new students with comprehensive information from the very beginning of the academic year, enabling them to plan their four-year university journey with confidence. The School also invited several senior students to share their learning experiences, internship insights and practical tips. In addition, each freshman was assigned a Personal Tutor to provide one-on-one support, guiding them through course selection, career planning, and other challenges, ensuring a strong  support throughout their university journey.

After the Orentation, freshmen from the School’s three undergraduate programmes held group discussions, where they engaged in in-depth exchanges with their module teachers. They also toured the School’s facilities, including the Cinema and TV Production Centre, gaining a clearer understanding of their academic pathways. This event marked an important step for the freshmen, helping them integrate into the School of Communication family and paving the way for a successful university experience.
