It is pleased to announce that the AI animated short film Sushi Party, directed by Dr. Sobel Chan Ka Lok, Senior Lecturer of the School of Communication, has received a series of international recognitions across art-tech, AI cinema, and animation film festivals. The film has been officially selected by Miami Art-Tech Summit 2025, AI Film Awards Cannes 2025, AI Short Film Festival Larissa Lumina 2025, and Brighton International Animation Festival 2026, and was also named a Finalist at Neu Wave AI Film Festival 2025.

The latest recognition comes from the Brighton International Animation Festival 2026, where Sushi Party has been officially selected for the “You’ve Got to Laugh” comedy animation programme, scheduled for 25 April 2026 at the Brighton Dome Studio Theatre in UK. This selection is particularly meaningful as the Brighton International Animation Festival is a British Academy of Film and Television Arts (BAFTA)-qualifying animation festival, further affirming the film’s international visibility and professional recognition.

The standing of the BIAF jury also reflects the festival’s strong professional profile. Its jury brings together internationally recognized animation and creative industry figures, including Nina Gantz, a BAFTA-winning and Oscar-nominated Dutch animation director; Golden Wolf, an award-winning creative agency with offices in London and New York; and Amy Ashton, co-founder and director of BlackFrame, who has extensive experience in animation, commercials, children’s series, music videos, and community-based creative production.

The wider festival journey of Sushi Party reflects Dr. Chan’s continuous exploration of generative AI, animation, comedy, and visual storytelling. The film also aligns with the School of Communication’s commitment to creative media innovation, digital storytelling, and the integration of emerging technologies into communication education. Through this achievement, Dr. Chan’s work demonstrates how AI-assisted animation filmmaking can open new creative possibilities for both professional media production and future-oriented communication education

Image : Sushi Party was officially selected for the “You’ve Got to Laugh” comedy animation programme at Brighton International Animation Festival 2026.

The School of Communication at The Hang Seng University of Hong Kong recently hosted an enriching learning activity titled “Exploring Macao: Preserving and Revitalizing Chinese Culture” from April 28 to 29. Thirty students from diverse academic disciplines, accompanied by four faculty members, embarked on an immersive two-day, one-night cultural exploration of Macao. Supported by the Sin Wai Kin Chinese Culture Promotion Scheme and assisted by the Cultural Affairs Bureau of the Macao S.A.R. Government, the activity provided students with a multifaceted experience through site visits and thematic lectures, enabling them to gain a deep understanding of the significance and practical methods of preserving Macao’s rich Chinese cultural heritage.

Although Macao is widely celebrated for its distinctive Portuguese architectural style, it also harbors a vibrant and diverse Chinese cultural heritage. Designated a UNESCO World Heritage site in 2005, Macao features over 20 historic buildings that uniquely blend Western architectural influences with traditional temples and Lingnan-style mansions. Protecting these invaluable cultural assets remains a vital and ongoing effort. This educational journey aimed at deepening students’ appreciation of Macao’s rich cultural and historical tapestry, highlighting the importance of preserving these treasures through guided tours, expert presentations, and immersive culinary experiences. The initiative closely aligns with the mission of the Sin Wai Kin Chinese Culture Promotion Scheme, which is committed to promoting the preservation and revitalization of Chinese intangible cultural heritage.

During the activity, students visited several significant historical and cultural landmarks, including the Mandarin’s House, the Taipa Houses, the Kun Iam Ancient Temple, the Former Iec Long Firecracker Factory Walkway, and the Macao Museum. Through professional guided tours, they explored the history, cultural significance, and stories behind each site.

In addition, students enjoyed Macao’s iconic snacks and authentic Portuguese cuisine, gaining firsthand insight into the city’s distinctive culinary heritage. This gastronomic experience deepened their appreciation of Macao’s rich multicultural fusion and vibrant cultural diversity.

To further deepen students’ knowledge of cultural heritage conservation and revitalization, the School invited Dr. LUI Chak Keong, a Guest Assistant Professor from Macau University of Science and Technology, to deliver a special lecture titled “Exploring World Heritage Conservation.” Dr. LUI shared valuable academic insights, and students actively engaged with him throughout the interactive Q&A session. Moreover, Dr. LEONG Hoi Keng, an expert in historical heritage, was invited by the School of Communication to personally guide students through the Kun Iam Ancient Temple, offering detailed explanations of the site’s historical background and cultural significance, thereby fostering a deeper respect and understanding of Macao’s cultural assets.

This learning journey not only broadened students’ cultural horizons but also strengthened their commitment to preserving Chinese culture, fully embodying the spirit of the Sin Wai Kin Chinese Culture Promotion Scheme in promoting cultural inheritance and innovation. The School of Communication at The Hang Seng University of Hong Kong remains dedicated to advancing the promotion and protection of Chinese culture, nurturing students to become proactive advocates for cultural heritage preservation.

The first stop was the “Mandarin’s House,” where teachers and students explored the blend of Chinese and Western architecture and learned about its owner, Zheng Guanying.

Dr. LUI Chak Keong gave a special presentation to the students at the “Zheng Guanying Memorial Museum.”

Teachers and students took a group photo with Dr. LUI Chak Keong outside the “Zheng Guanying Memorial Museum.”

A guide from the Cultural Affairs Bureau of the Macao S.A.R.
The inaugural “AI Workshop,” organized by the School of Communication at The Hang Seng University of Hong Kong, co-hosted by Radio Television Hong Kong (RTHK), and supported by the University Teaching and Learning Quality Committee, has successfully concluded. On April 27, the “AI Workshop Students’ Works Exhibition and Awards Ceremony” was held to showcase students’ creative achievements and honor outstanding works.

This workshop marks the School of Communication’s first in-depth collaboration with the broadcasting and film industries in the field of artificial intelligence education. It was thoughtfully conceptualized and planned by Associate Dean Professor Ronald Chiu, together with three faculty members – Dr Sobel Chan, Ms. Doris Law and Ms. Glacial Cheng – marking a significant milestone in innovative teaching.

Amid the increasing integration of artificial intelligence in journalism, communication, and media, the workshop titled “Enhancing Digital Communication through Generative AI: A Pilot Scheme for Innovative Pedagogies” directly engages with this emerging trend. Its aim is to deepen both faculty and students’ understanding and practical application of Generative AI, thereby enhancing students’ competitiveness in the future job market.

The School of Communication extends sincere gratitude to RTHK for their strong support, providing professional instructors and organizing two visits to RTHK, enabling students to gain firsthand experience of AI’s practical applications in broadcasting. The expertise and guidance from RTHK professionals greatly enriched the students’ learning and broadened their perspectives.

Special thanks also go to Mr. Wave Cheung from the Hong Kong Visual Effects Association, who shared the latest AI advancements in the film industry and provided in-depth mentorship, effectively bridging theory and practice for the students.

Following eight intensive training sessions, students successfully utilized Generative AI to create image works on diverse themes. The School held a week-long exhibition of these works, followed by an award ceremony. From many entries, the judging panel selected a champion, first and second runners-up, and two merit award recipients. The champion was awarded to Lu Chaoqun, a Year 4 student of Convergent Media and Communication Technology; the first runner-up was Li Jinhan, a Year 2 student of Journalism and Communication; the second runner-up was Li Yuanjin, a Year 3 student of Convergent Media and Communication Technology. Merit awards went to Ou Yalan, a Year 2 student of Arts and Culture Communication, and Zhu Junxing, a Year 4 student of BBA (Hons) in Professional Accountancy.

The judges highly commended the students for their boundless creativity, diverse themes, and bold experimentation. They encouraged students to embrace AI as a powerful tool while cautioning against over-reliance, emphasizing the importance of cultivating personal storytelling skills and creativity.

At the award ceremony, Professor Scarlet Tso, Dean of the School of Communication, emphasized that although AI has become an indispensable component across today’s workplaces and professional fields, mastering technology alone is not enough. Developing the right mindset toward AI use – including ethical considerations and critical thinking – is equally vital. These qualities empower students to make responsible, professional decisions and produce superior work.

With the successful launch of this pioneering teaching initiative, the School of Communication looks forward to students applying the knowledge and skills gained from this workshop to their future studies and careers, showcasing greater creativity, responsibility, and professional competitiveness.

<img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="alignnone wp-image-25662 size-full" src="https://scom.hsu.edu.hk/wp-content/uploads/2026/05/100-2-3.jpg" alt="" width="1800"
The School of Communication (SCOM) hosted the 10th HSUHK Business Journalism Awards Ceremony on 23 April. A total of 34 awards were presented to 15 media organisations, selected from over 600 submissions. The ceremony was officiated by Mr Algernon Yau, Secretary for Commerce and Economic Development of the HKSAR Government.

The “Business Journalist of the Year” award was presented to Huang Wenqi from HK01, while the “Young Business Journalist of the Year” award went to Lau Siu-yee, also from HK01. Other major awards included “Best Business News Report”, “Best Business News Series”, “Best Real Estate News Report”, “Best Business Environmental, Social and Governance (ESG) News Report”, “Best Economic and Financial Policy News Report”, “Best Business Technology News Report”, and “Best Greater Bay Area Business News Report”. The award-winning organisations include TVB, Hong Kong Cable News, Phoenix Hong Kong Channel, RTHK, Ming Pao, Hong Kong Economic Journal, Hong Kong Economic Journal Monthly, Bloomberg Businessweek (Chinese Edition), Wen Wei Po, Ta Kung Pao, China Daily (Hong Kong Edition), Sing Tao Headline, East Week, and Economic Digest.

In his speech, Mr Yau emphasised that Hong Kong, as an international trade and financial hub, greatly benefits from in-depth business journalism. Such reporting enables stakeholders across various sectors to better understand market dynamics and make informed decisions. He commended the Business Journalism Awards for setting a professional yardstick in the industry over the past decade and encouraged practitioners to continue delivering high-quality journalism for the benefit of society.

Professor Simon S M Ho, President of HSUHK, remarked that the Business Journalism Awards have reached their 10th anniversary this year and have become one of the most influential accolades in Hong Kong’s business and financial journalism sector. He noted that in this age of information abundance, the public relies heavily on professional journalists to distil meaningful and trustworthy news. Professor Ho believes that outstanding journalists will not be replaced by artificial intelligence. Instead, they will leverage new tools to apply humanistic insight and professional judgement, while continuing to shoulder the responsibility of guiding informed decision-making in society.

Professor Scarlet Tso, Dean of SCOM, reflected on the Awards’ decade-long journey, noting that establishing a high-calibre business journalism award in Hong Kong has not been easy. She said SCOM took on this mission by launching the Business Journalism Awards — the first professional business journalism award initiated by a higher education institution in Hong Kong — with the aim of recognising outstanding practitioners. She observed that the profile of award-winning media organisations has expanded significantly over the years. First, during the radio station introduction, Ms. Michelle Ngai, Channel Director of Metro Finance, delivered a presentation on the channel’s positioning and operations. She shared how the channel designs its programmes in response to global market developments and social trends, with the goal of offering distinctive content—so that it becomes a platform that others cannot easily replace.

Next, Mr. Michael Chan, Senior Commercial Producer and Station Sound Producer, introduced students to Metro Broadcasting’s organisational structure and operations, as well as its website and mobile application. As a programme host himself, he also pointed out that radio is no longer limited to audio broadcasting; it must also keep pace with the growth of multimedia platforms. He emphasised that programme hosts need to manage their own shows and possess a wide range of skills—for example, video production and social media design—so they can stay relevant and move with the times.

In the second part, Mr. Chan led the students on a tour of the station facilities, including various live broadcasting studios and recording facilities. He also guided them through hands-on operation of the equipment.

The third part consisted of experience-based activities. Students had the opportunity to participate in a programme recording, take part in a discussion with Mr. Chan, and personally experience the programme production process. They also got to enjoy the fun of being “on-air.”

Through this visit and hands-on experience, students were able to understand how radio broadcasting operates and develops, while also gaining insight into the professionalism and expectations of the broadcasting industry—benefiting greatly from the experience.

Ms. Michelle Ngai, Channel Director of Metro Finance, delivered a presentation on the channel’s positioning and operations.

Mr. Michael Chan, Senior Commercial Producer and Station Sound Producer led the students on a tour of the station facilities.

Students had the opportunity to participate in a programme recording.

Group photo at the entrance of Metro Broadcast.

Mr. Lam Kwok Fai, Director of the Hong Kong Heritage Museum, was invited to speak at the “SCOM TALK” series organised by the School of Communication at Hang Seng University of Hong Kong on 26 March. Under the theme “Effective Strategies for Museums to Tell Good Stories”, he shared valuable insights into cultural communication and narrative strategies in museums. The talk drew a large and engaged audience.

Mr. Lam began by introducing the basic models of communication, pointing out that the distinctive feature of museum communication lies in the decontextualization and recontextualization of exhibits, while also taking into account visitors’ purposes and the composition of their experiences. He cited the Shannon-Weaver communication model and the interactive experience model by Falk and Dierking to analyse how visitors’ personal, social, and physical contexts influence their exhibition experience. Mr Lam emphasised that curation is a process of telling stories through exhibits within limited space and resources, requiring a balance among the museum’s mission, financial support, administrative procedures, and staffing.

Mr. Lam also drew on several successful exhibitions as case studies to concretely demonstrate the three key elements of storytelling — engaging content, interactivity, and exhibition design — as well as the outcomes of exhibition performance evaluation.

Mr. Lam Kwok Fai responded to students’ questions

Group photo
