The annual Internship Introductory Briefing Session of the School of Communication was successfully held on September 17, attracting nearly 100 enthusiastic third-year students from the School’s three undergraduate programmes — Journalism and Communication, Convergent Media and Communication Technology, and Arts and Culture Communication. The event aimed to provide students with a comprehensive understanding of the importance of internships, detailed explanations of the application procedures, selection criteria, and internship matching arrangements, helping them to prepare thoroughly and smoothly transition from academic studies to the workplace.

Due to the large number of participants this year, the School arranged for faculty members responsible for different disciplines to conduct group discussions with students. This allowed students to engage in in-depth exchanges about internship opportunities specific to their respective fields, further enhancing their understanding of internship work. The faculty consistently emphasized the importance of students developing the habit of regularly checking their emails, beginning to prepare their CVs and portfolios early, and cultivating a strong awareness of current news. In addition, students must ensure they accumulate enough School of Communication activity hours (SCOM Hours) to meet the internship application requirements and actively prepare for the group interviews scheduled for early December.

The entire briefing session was both lively and informative, laying a solid foundation for students’ future internship journeys. It inspired them to seize valuable practical opportunities to enhance their professional skills and workplace competitiveness.

Generative Artificial Intelligence (GenAI) is among the most transformative technological advancements, presenting substantial opportunities and challenges for individuals and organisations. However, the widespread adoption of GenAI raises critical questions regarding its creative application, ethical considerations, and the need to balance risks and benefits – particularly in the domains of arts and culture communication, which involves the strategic management of the communication process about arts and culture content and industries.

In Hong Kong, the arts, culture and creative industries have gained significant momentum. Now, Hong Kong is home to over 1,000 arts groups that host approximately 8,000 performances annually, attracting more than 3 million spectators. Hong Kong is also one of the world’s most significant art auction markets. International events such as the Hong Kong Arts Festival and Art Basel bring together top global artists and galleries, showcasing diverse cultures and creativity.

Aligning with these initiatives, the School of Communication at Hang Seng University of Hong Kong launched the Bachelor of Arts (Honours) in Arts and Culture Communication programme in 2024. In the era of AI, this programme plans to develop new knowledge, creative skills, and ethical frameworks for integrating AI as a meaningful and effective tool in teaching and creative communication. As more and more students and educators engage in the use of GenAI applications, it is essential to carefully balance the risks and benefits of integrating AI into creative and cultural industries while advancing teaching and learning in higher education.

Hence, the School of Communication at The Hang Seng University of Hong Kong organises the “Al Creativity, Ethics, and Interdisciplinarity: A Symposium on Empowering Arts and Culture Communication through Generative AI”, bringing together academic and industry experts from Finland, the United States, Mainland China, and Hong Kong for a two-day interdisciplinary international symposium in Hong Kong. The program features two keynote speeches and four parallel sessions. Discussion themes include: (1) Generative AI empowering arts and culture communication: reshaping creativity and global engagement; (2) Generative AI–driven transformation in communication education: ethics and literacy building; (3) Generative AI steering innovation in the art, culture, and media industries; and (4) Interdisciplinary integration of generative AI: opportunities, methods, and reflections. The symposium aims to share cutting-edge research and practical insights, foster academic collaboration and innovation, and encourage participants to integrate the conference outcomes into their teaching and research.

The Rotary Club of Sagacity Hong Kong delegation visited the School of Communication at The Hang Seng University of Hong Kong (HSUHK) on 14 September 2026. The delegation was warmly received by Prof. Scarlet Tso, Dean of the School of Communication, who took the opportunity to introduce the history of HSUHK and the School of Communication.

Leading the delegation was the President of the Rotary Club of Sagacity Hong Kong, Mr. Kenneth Chan, an alumnus of Hang Seng School of Commerce. During the visit, Mr. Chan expressed his heartfelt sentiments, stating: “From Hang Seng School of Commerce, which was deeply rooted in business education in its early days, to the most advanced private university in Hong Kong today, I am filled with boundless emotion and pride as I witness my alma mater’s leap forward and remarkable achievements!”

The delegation’s visit included a discussion with Prof. Scarlet Tso, a guided tour of the School of Communication’s state-of-the-art facilities such as the Cinema and Television Production Centre, and the Martin Ka Shing Lee Innovation Lab. These activities showcased the School’s dedication to innovative education and professional excellence.

The Rotary Club of Sagacity Hong Kong delegation visited Martin Ka Shing Lee Innovation Lab.

The “HADO Sports & Entertainment Carnival 2026,” organised by HADO Hong Kong, was held on 13 September 2026 at Graham Hall, Central. With the theme “Sports × Technology × Entertainment,” the event attracted around 150 participants, including representatives from the business and education sectors, community leaders, young people, parents, and sports enthusiasts.  Together, they experience the innovative HADO electronic dodgeball and explored the development potential of emerging technology-powered sports. The School of Communication (SCOM) at The Hang Seng University of Hong Kong (HSUHK) became one of the supporting organisations of this innovative event for the first time, with around 10 teachers and students participating.  This initiative seeks to bring this wave of innovation into the community and inspire broader interest and involvement in the intersections of technology, sports, media, and communication.

Professor Scarlet Tso, Dean of SCOM, shared her insights into the development of emerging sports in Hong Kong from ta communication perspective.  She discussed how education, public experience, and cross-sector collaboration can enhance society’s awareness of and participation in technology sports. Professor Tso highlighted that modern communication is not merely about disseminating information but, more importantly, about creating experiences that audiences are willing to engage in, feel personally involved with, and even actively share — and HADO is a prime example. A match lasting just a few minutes can generate rich stories of tension, teamwork, comebacks, cheering, and personal breakthroughs.  These moments can be transformed into short videos, photos, and social media content. She hopes that students from SCOM can reflect on how best to introduce HADO to those unfamiliar with it, translating “AR technology” into compelling and accessible stories. Using mediums such as short videos, live streaming, campus media, or innovative event design, they can encourage more people to transition from passive viewers to active participants. Additionally, she emphasised the importance of leveraging technology to create more engaging and story-driven activities that connect with people on a deeper level.

Dr. Chan Chi Kit, Programme Director of the Master of Arts in Entertainment Media Management and Communication (MA-EMMC) at the School of Communication, elaborated further on the significance of entertainment media management as a discipline focused on the realm of the “Attention Economy.” This programme emphasises the strategies and methods necessary to effectively capture and engage audiences’ attention within the increasingly competitive entertainment industry.

Dr. Chan highlighted that in today’s media landscape, audience attention has become a highly valuable resource. The ability to attract and sustain this attention is unquestionably one of the key factors driving success in the entertainment sector. The MA-EMMC aims to equip students with a comprehensive understanding of relevant theories while simultaneously enhancing their professional expertise in practical applications, thereby laying a solid foundation for future development within the fields of entertainment and media management.

In addition to the highlight event, the “2026 HADO Electronic Dodgeball World Championship Hong Kong Regional Qualifying Tournament,” the carnival also featured individual and team HADO experiences, Artbat Digital Painting Performance, and several interactive sports education booths. Participants , regardless of age or prior sports experience, were able to engage in HADO’s dynamic gameplay, which cultivates skills such as observation, communication, teamwork, and on-the-spot decision-making.

A special feature of the event was a HADO charity match, where representatives from the SCOM at HSUHK and the Rotary Club of Sagacity Hong Kong participated in a friendly competition and exchange. It used sports to foster connections among the education, business, and community sectors, and demonstrating the possibilities of technology sports in promoting social engagement and cross-sector collaboration.

HADO is an innovative technology sport that combines augmented reality (AR) technology, focusing on challenging participants’ reaction speed, strategic thinking, and teamwork. Participants wear AR-equipped headsets along with arm sensors to engage in real-time 3-on-3 battles in a physical venue, firing energy balls and setting up shields for exciting competitive confrontations. Since its launch in 2016, HADO has successfully expanded to more than 40 countries and regions worldwide, with over 10 million cumulative players.

The School of Communication (SCOM) held its first New Student Orientation session on 10 September 2026, warmly welcoming undergraduate freshmen of the 2026/27 academic year, with around 80 students participating. Themed “Empowering Your Journey to a Brighter Future,” the event aimed to help new students build confidence and equip themselves with diverse skills, laying a strong foundation for their university journey and future career development. As the day coincided with Teachers’ Day, the students took the opportunity to express their festive greetings to their teachers, creating a warm atmosphere.

Professor Scarlet Tso, Dean of the School of Communication, delivered a warm welcome speech at the event. She encouraged freshmen to maintain a curious mind, cultivate critical thinking skills, embrace challenges, and view mistakes as opportunities for growth. Professor Tso also emphasised the importance of interpersonal connections in today’s fast-evolving digital era, urging students to make the best use of innovative tools such as AI, while actively expanding their networks. She encouraged the freshmen to fully enjoy their university life and concluded with an inspiring message: “Today you are proud of the School of Communication; tomorrow the School of Communication will be proud of you!”

The School prepared six “success kits” to freshmen at the Orientation, covering the topics that students care most about: “Attending Classes,” “Taking IELTS,” “Participating in Summer Internships,” “School Activities,” “Personal Tutor,” and “Being part of the Big Family.” The initiative aimed to equip new students with comprehensive information from the very beginning of the academic year, enabling them to plan their four-year university journey with confidence. The School also invited several senior students to share their learning experiences, internship insights and practical tips. In addition, each freshman was assigned a Personal Tutor to provide one-on-one support, guiding them through course selection, career planning, and other challenges, ensuring a strong  support throughout their university journey.

After the Orentation, freshmen from the School’s three undergraduate programmes held group discussions, where they engaged in in-depth exchanges with their module teachers. They also toured the School’s facilities, including the Cinema and TV Production Centre, gaining a clearer understanding of their academic pathways. This event marked an important step for the freshmen, helping them integrate into the School of Communication family and paving the way for a successful university experience.

On 31 August 2026, the School of Communication (SCOM) at The Hang Seng University of Hong Kong organised a New Student Orientation for its postgraduate programmes. The event welcomed incoming cohorts of three Master’s programmes: the Master of Arts in Strategic Communication (MA-SC), the Master of Arts in Digital Media for Online Communication (MA-DMOC), and the newly launched Master of Arts in Entertainment Media Management and Communication (MA-EMMC).

The Orientation aimed to familiarise the new students with the academic programmes and administrative matters, while providing them an opportunity to engage with the faculty and peers at the onset of their academic journey.

The event commenced with a welcoming address by Professor Scarlet Tso, Dean of the School of Communication, followed by an introduction from Professor Ronald Chiu, Associate Dean, who shared an overview of SCOM’s vision and mission.

All teaching staff from the School of Communication subsequently took the stage to introduce themselves, briefly outlining their expertise and commitment to supporting the students in their academic journey. A special welcome was also extended by Dr. Dr Wan Kin Man from the School of Transdisciplinary Studies, who teaches the Digital Governance elective module.

After the initial presentations, students and staff enjoyed a tea break, fostering informal conversations where attendees shared ideas and strengthened connections in a relaxed setting. This was followed by programme-specific briefings.

The three programme directors, Dr. Howard Song (MA-SC), Professor Trevor Siu (MA-DMOC), and Dr. Chi Kit Chan (MA-EMMC), further explained their respective programme structures, learning outcomes, and graduation requirements, facilitating a clearer understanding for the students to plan their studies.

On 26 August 2026, a distinguished delegation from the Yunnan University of Finance and Economics (YNUFE) visited the School of Communication (SCOM) of The Hang Seng University of Hong Kong (HSUHK). The delegation, led by Dr. Li Zhengbiao, Vice President of YNUFE, comprised 16 prominent members, including senior university officials, school deans, and department heads.

Dr. Howard Song, Director of the Master of Arts in Strategic Communication programme, warmly welcomed the delegation. Dr. Song presented a brief history of HSUHK, highlighting its transformation into a leading university since its founding in 1980. He also introduced the academic achievements and contributions of SCOM in communication education and its focus on strategic communication, digital media, and international collaboration.

Key discussion topics during this exchange included potential collaborative opportunities such as exchange programmes for faculty and students and joint research activities. The YNUFE delegation expressed great interest in SCOM’s Cinema and TV Production Centre during their tour, where they viewed its industry-grade facilities and innovative teaching initiatives.
