This year’s programme received an enthusiastic response, attracting more than 200 young talents from Chinese Mainland, Taiwan, Hong Kong, Macao, the United Kingdom, Malaysia, Indonesia, Vietnam and other regions. Following a rigorous multi-stage selection process, 60 outstanding students advanced to the final programme. They not only took part in business site visits and academic exchanges in Hong Kong and Macau but also presented their meticulously crafted business plans on the final day, fully showcasing their entrepreneurial potential.

The New Century Elite Development Programme has brought together over 2,700 outstanding university students from around the world since 1998.
The Centre for Communication Studies (CCS) of the School of Communication at The Hang Seng University of Hong Kong (HSUHK) has joined the Scout Association of Hong Kong’s “My Future My Way” programme, partnering with the CUHK Business School and Tung Wah College to provide career planning courses for young people. A Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) Signing Ceremony and Programme Launch was held at the Hong Kong Scout Centre on 29 August, marking the commencement of the three-year collaboration.

“My Future My Way” aims to combine the professional and academic resources of higher education institutions with experiential and practical learning to help young people explore their interests, develop their potential and consider their future career paths. The programme comprises three areas – entrepreneurship, communication and healthcare – with courses offered by the three participating institutions. CCS will offer the communication course, which is designed to equip participants with foundational knowledge and practical skills to communicate confidently, ethically and effectively across personal, digital, public and cross-cultural contexts.

Dr Wilson Lai, Chief Commissioner of the Scout Association of Hong Kong, said at the ceremony that the collaboration brings together the strengths of Scouting’s non-formal education and the academic resources of higher education institutions. Through experiential and practical learning, young people will have opportunities to develop leadership, problem-solving skills and a spirit of service, while gaining theoretical knowledge and broadening their professional horizons.

Mr Clarence Leung, BBS, JP, Under Secretary for Home and Youth Affairs, officiated as a witness to the MoU signing and addressed the ceremony. He highlighted the Government’s commitment to youth development and expressed confidence that collaboration between the Scout Association and higher education institutions would help nurture young people with a global outlook, professional skills, a sense of responsibility and a positive mindset.

The “My Future My Way” programme is expected to benefit more than 200 young Scout members. Through its participation, CCS will contribute its expertise in communication education and training to help participants strengthen their communication skills and deepen their understanding of communication in different contexts, better preparing them for their future studies, careers and personal development.

The CCS of the School of Communication at HSUHK signed a MOU with the Scout Association of Hong Kong to jointly provide career planning courses for young people.

Representatives of HSUHK — Professor Simon Shun-Man HO (3rd from right, front row), Professor Scarlet TSO Hung (4th from left, front row), and Dr. Fred LUK Koon Yung (3rd from left, front row) — attended the MOU Signing and Programme Launch Ceremony in support of the “My Future My Way” initiative.
CCS of the School of Communication at HSUHK signed an MOU with the Scout Association of Hong Kong to jointly offer courses for young people under the “My Future My Way” initiative.

The Scout Association of Hong Kong presented a souvenir to the School of Communication at The Hang Seng University of Hong Kong (HSUHK).
From left: Dr. Wilson LAI Wai-sang, Chief Commissioner of the Scout Association of Hong Kong; Professor Simon Shun-Man HO, then President of HSUHK; Professor Scarlet TSO Hung, Dean of the School of Communication at HSUHK; and Mr. Clarence LEUNG Wang Ching, Under Secretary for Home and Youth Affairs.

The Centre for Communication Studies (CCS) of the School of Communication at The Hang Seng University of Hong Kong (HSUHK) was invited by the Hong Kong Public Relations Professionals’ Association (PRPA) to undertake a collaborative industry-wide survey as part of its 30th anniversary initiatives.

The survey was designed by CCS, with the questionnaire developed in consultation with PRPA. Data were collected by PRPA, while CCS conducted the analysis and prepared the report. It targeted both PR professionals and C-suite executives, capturing perspectives across different levels of practice and leadership.

The study examines how the profession is navigating a rapidly evolving communication landscape shaped by a set of emerging – and accelerating – risks. In particular, it focuses on three key areas.

First, technological disruption, especially the growing impact of generative AI, synthetic media, and misinformation, which are reshaping both content creation and information credibility. Second, geopolitical and cultural volatility, where even carefully crafted or neutral messaging may trigger unintended backlash in increasingly sensitive or polarised environments. Third, rising stakeholder activism, as consumers, investors, and communities are becoming more active in scrutinising, challenging, and influencing corporate behaviour and communications.

Findings from the survey were presented by Dr. Fred Luk, Director of CCS, and Mr. Purry Chiu, President of PRPA, at the PRPA 30th Anniversary Symposium & 2026 Annual Dinner.

The results indicate that the PR profession is entering a period of significant transition. While AI is widely seen as enhancing efficiency and enabling new capabilities, it is also recognised as a growing source of reputational risk, particularly in relation to misinformation and deepfakes. At the same time, the findings point to a gap between awareness and preparedness, with many organisations yet to establish formal protocols to manage AI-related crises.

Dr. Luk highlighted that the profession is undergoing a structural shift, as automation increasingly affects process-driven tasks. He noted that the core value of PR is moving towards strategic thinking, relationship management, and complex communication where human judgement remains essential.

Mr. Chiu also noted a divergence in perceptions between PR practitioners and senior management, particularly regarding the impact of AI and the level of organisational preparedness. He emphasised that ESG (Environmental, Social, and Governance) communication, geopolitical and cultural sensitivity, and stakeholder expectations are becoming increasingly central to reputation management.

Overall, the survey underscores the importance of strengthening organisational readiness, enhancing alignment across different levels of leadership, and developing capabilities to navigate an increasingly complex communication environment.

Dr. Fred Luk, Director of the Centre for Communication Studies, and Mr. Purry Chiu, President of the Hong Kong Public Relations Professionals’ Association, present the survey findings during a panel discussion at the symposium.

Professor Chiu Ying-chun, Associate Dean of the School of Communication at The Hang Seng University of Hong Kong, asks a question during the symposium.

Panel Discussion 1: Mr. C.F.
