SCOM’s First Teaching Sharing Seminar in AY 2023/24

The first teaching sharing seminar of AY 2023–24 was organized by the School of Communication (SCOM) on 23 November 2023. Dr. Clio Wu, Assistant Professor, moderated the sharing session. The topic of the seminar was “Part-time Teaching, Full-time Engagement”.  Ms. Teressa SIU, Ms. Karen WONG, Mr. Earnest LI, and Mr. Rex MA, part-time teachers of the School, were invited to share their teaching experiences and observations in the seminar.

Ms. Teressa Siu recognised the positive learning attitude and enthusiasm of students of the School. Despite the fact she needed to mark a lot of assignments for the news writing module she taught in Semester 1, she found it rewarding to see students improving as she was teaching them relevant knowledge and skills.

Ms. Karen WONG was more concerned for classroom dynamics and student participation. She always strived to enhance students’ interest in learning by coming up with innovative ways of teaching. For example, she adjusted the order of delivery of lectures and discussions with a view to attracting more students to attend classes on time. In addition, she spent a lot of time communicating with students and even provided emotional support for students by escorting them to the examination venues.

To enhance students’ interest in learning, Mr. Earnest LI arranged numerous practical activities in his teaching, such as shooting exercises and topic discussions. Mr LI put the philosophy of “teaching by example” into practice. By completing photography assignments together with students and then asking them to compare their works, he successfully managed to deepen students’ understanding of the training requirements and thereby improving their professional skills.

Mr. Rex Ma actively incorporated industry elements into his classroom teaching. He also put much effort in strengthening the connection between the School and the industry. Every semester, he invited subject experts from the industry to share their knowledge and insights with students, thus helping them keep up with the latest market trends. Additionally, Mr. Ma organized various off-campus visits and activities for students, which are conducive to broadening students’ horizons beyond the campus.
