Alice Mak: Tears Shed After Witnessing Black Rain Disaster
Reminds Self Not to Raise Hand to Vote as an Official

The current government places a strong emphasis on youth affairs, having developed a “Youth Development Blueprint.” In an interview with the School of Communication at Hang Seng University, Alice Mak Mei-kuen, Secretary for Home and Youth Affairs, explained that the blueprint aims to cultivate the younger generation into patriotic citizens with a global perspective and a positive mindset, while also assisting them in finding their paths.

Reflecting on her two years in office, Mak recounted the unforgettable experience of witnessing the aftermath of the unprecedented black rainstorm last September. Upon visiting a shelter in Sheung Shui, she was deeply moved by the plight of the affected residents and shed tears on the spot.

Mak also shared the challenges she faces transitioning from a legislator to a government official, particularly the difficulty of resisting the urge to raise her hand to vote during Legislative Council sessions. As a bureau chief, she experiences significant work pressure and finds solace in buffet dining: “Seeing a table full of food brings me so much happiness.”
