Metaverse and Artificial Intelligence Taking the Main Domain in Business Communication Education
On 7th and 8th July 2023, the School of Communication proudly hosted its first and groundbreaking large-scale academic conference, entitled “2023 SCOM Conference on Metaverse: Ecosystem, Communication and Technology in Mainland, Taiwan, Macau and Hong Kong.” The event was inaugurated with an insightful keynote address by Professor Simon Ho, President of the University, who emphasized the increasing prominence of “Spatial Computing,” epitomized by Virtual Reality (VR), and the rising popularity of “AI-Generated Content” (AIGC) as key drivers of future trends. Professor Scarlet Tso, Dean of School of Communication, during her welcoming remarks, highlighted the School’s dedication to integrating innovative elements related to the metaverse and artificial intelligence within its course offerings. In particular, Bachelor of Arts (Honours) in Convergent Media and Communication Technology and the Master of Digital Media program (upcoming) will be adapted to stay ahead of the rapidly evolving communication industry and to address the expanding demand for highly skilled professionals. The conference featured an exceptional roster of distinguished keynote speakers, including Professor Chen, Ching-Ho, President of Shih Hsin University, Mr. George Chen, Managing Director of the Asia Group and the World Scholar of Yale University, and Dr. Evan Xu, an expert at Tencent Video AI Technology Center.
The conference is designed to serve as a dynamic academic platform that unites distinguished scholars, technology experts, and industry leaders from across the cross-strait four regions, fostering in-depth research and exploration of the metaverse. The comprehensive discussions address: (1) macro operating systems and the growth of production and sales in metaverse business communication, (2) communication education and talent development initiatives in the metaverse and artificial intelligence, (3) technological advancements, virtual avatars, artificial intelligence algorithms, and content generation techniques (Unreal Engine 5 and Unity) in the metaverse, along with the establishment of metaverse cities and cultural tourism, (4) cultural and creative brand marketing within the metaverse, post-cinema narrative strategies, cutting-edge models in animation and manga production practices, immersive consumption experiences, and innovative market marketing approaches. The symposium yielded an abundance of insightful outcomes, with participating scholars and guests agreeing that the foundational support provided by artificial intelligence, blockchain, and mixed reality technologies will unlock a wealth of possibilities for the metaverse’s future. This forward-thinking perspective will enable School of Communication to continually innovate its curriculum design and effectively nurture talent to meet the evolving needs of both society and the industry.
