SCOM’s Third Teaching Sharing Seminar in AY 2023/24

The School of Communication (SCOM) held its third teaching sharing seminar of AY 2023-24 on 29 April 2024. The sharing session was moderated by Associate Professor, Dr. Keith Cheung, with the theme set as “Using GenAI in Educational Settings”. Dr. Keith Cheung and Dr. Sobel Chan, Senior Lecturer of SCOM, shared their experiences and perspectives on incorporating GenAI tools into their teaching modules.

During the sharing, Dr. Cheung emphasized the convenience of cloud-based services like Colab, which eliminate the need for specialized software or hardware setups when utilizing AI frameworks and libraries. This enables teachers to easily share well-documented, reproducible, and executable examples with their students, greatly enhancing the teaching and learning experience of GenAI tools, including the Large Language Model (LLM).

Additionally, by enabling natural language conversations with the Large Language Model (LLM), the language barrier between users and GenAI tools is significantly reduced, making GenAI more accessible to both teachers and students. Users are no longer relying on the computer programming languages to instruct the LLM to perform various tasks.

Instead, they can focus on learning prompt engineering strategies and tactics to achieve better results. Dr. Cheung illustrated the practicality of using ChatGPT and LLM in teaching programming concepts by sharing several examples that showcased the usefulness of LLM in supporting students’ learning.

Dr. Chan discussed the effective utilization of GenAI tools such as Midjourney for generating images. He emphasized the importance of providing accurate natural language descriptions, known as prompts, to obtain desired results. Dr. Chan also shared an example of incorporating GenAI into his class to assist in producing high-quality AI-generated background images for videos.

The participants of the sharing seminar displayed great interest in the topic and actively engaged in discussions, posing numerous questions throughout the sharing session.
