Dr Haywood Cheung, President of the Chinese Gold and Silver Exchange:
Hong Kong Lacks Commodity Connect Possibly Due to Officials’ Oversight, Advocates for the Establishment of a ‘Belt and Road’ Gold Commodity Corridor
Hong Kong lacks a Gold Commodity Connect alongside its Bond Connect and Stock Connect. In an interview on SCOM Talk Show of HSUHK, Dr Haywood Cheung, renowned as the “King of Gold” and President of the Chinese Gold and Silver Exchange, suggested that this gap may result from official oversight. He proposed integrating gold products into mutual market access and establishing a gold product corridor aligned with the Belt and Road Initiative.
Regarding the growing trend of Hong Kong residents “tripping north” to Shenzhen, Dr Cheung, as the President of the New Territories General Chamber of Commerce, acknowledged that the retail and catering industries in the New Territories have been severely affected. He called on the central government to open up more cities for individual visit scheme to promote Hong Kong’s tourism economy.
