The “Joint School Advisory Committees Meeting cum Retreat of the School of Communication of AY2023/24” was held on 17 August 2024, at the Regal Kowloon Hotel. The event brought together advisory committee members, external examiners, and part-time lecturers from the School and its four Programmes, along with the School’s faculty and staff, to review the past year’s developments and discuss the future direction of the School.
The meeting commenced with Professor Scarlet Tso, Dean of the School of Communication, providing an overview of the School’s achievements over the past year. Professor Tso highlighted that the School’s enrollment figures are promising this year, with all four programmes, including the newly launched Bachelor of Arts (Honours) in Arts and Culture Communication, receiving enthusiastic responses. She also noted that the School had organized various internal and external activities over the past year, with students winning awards in multiple competitions, thereby enhancing the School’s external collaborations and public recognition.
Programme directors of the School’s four programmes, including Dr. Chan Chi Kit for the Bachelor of Journalism and Communication (Honours), Professor Trevor Siu for the Bachelor of Arts (Honours) in Convergent Media and Communication Technology, Dr. Clio Wu for the Bachelor of Arts (Honours) in Cultural Communication, and Dr. Howard Song for the Master of Arts in Strategic Communication, each provided updates on their respective Programmes’ latest developments and plans for the coming year. This allowed attendees to gain a deeper understanding of the direction in which each programme is heading.
Subsequently, attendees engaged in in-depth discussions on four major topics:
- How to increase industry and societal awareness of the School to enhance its competitiveness
- How to boost students’ interest and understanding of news, especially international news?
- The pros and cons of using ChatGPT in teaching and learning.
- How to improve students’ learning attitudes and classroom discipline?
Throughout the discussion, participants enthusiastically exchanged their views and presented numerous innovative and constructive ideas. To boost awareness of the college within both the industry and society, they recommended utilizing the prestigious “The Business Journalism Awards of HSUHK” and the “SCOM Talk Show” to enhance external collaboration. Furthermore, to spark students’ interest and enhance their understanding of journalism, it was suggested to begin with topics that resonate with them and gradually introduce the political and social issues underlying the news, thereby deepening their comprehension of the field.
Professor Tso remarked that the attendees, who are either key figures in the industry or hold significant positions in other higher education institutions, offered insightful suggestions from the perspectives of practical business operations or by referencing best practices from other universities. She emphasized that the relevant committees within the School would thoroughly discuss and consider each suggestion to continuously improve the quality of education and strengthen external collaborations, thereby enhancing the School’s reputation.
Following the discussion session, guests and faculty members enjoyed lunch together, continuing their exchanges in a relaxed atmosphere.
