The Centre for Communication Studies at The Hang Seng University of Hong Kong (HSUHK) School of Communication organized a seminar for participants of the “The E-League Programme” of the Eastern District Office on 8 August 2024.
The seminar sought to enhance students’ understanding of the value of university education, the career prospects in the media and communication industry, and the programmes offered by the School of Communication, while enriching their knowledge on media and communication.
Professor Scarlet Tso, Dean of the School of Communication, extended a warm welcome to the guests, highlighting the importance of communication skills and the unique features of the School of Communication.
The seminar began with a workshop at the Cinema and TV Production Centre led by Senior Lecturer Ms Doris Law. She introduced students to the workflow of television news production and the sophisticated equipment involved. Students showed keen interest in the operations of TV broadcasting and took turns to role-play anchor, cameraperson and program director.
Students also participated in another workshop at the Radio Broadcast Studio, where Dr Connie Chan explained the process of recording news broadcasts and taught them techniques of reading scripts. Students eagerly took turns acting as broadcasters reporting news on air.
After the tour, Dr Fred Luk, Director of the Centre for Communication Studies, shared insights on the values of a university education, inspiring students to reflect on their motivations for attending university. Dr Luk encouraged them to pursue not only academic qualifications but also the ability to engage in lifelong learning. He also motivated students to discover their interests while continuously enhancing their learning capabilities.
Dr Janice Wong, Deputy Director of the Centre, shared information with students on the development and career prospects in the media industry. She stressed that in addition to business news, corporate communication and financial public relations are significant trends for the industry today. Dr Wong also provided an overview of the degree programmes offered by the School, internship opportunities, and employment prospects, as well as displaying some notable school activities.
The seminar concluded with three students from the School of Communication sharing their experiences of their university life, allowing participants to gain further insight into the learning ambience of the School.
