School of Communication Co-Hosts “Seminar on Chinese Nation and Hakka Culture”
The “Seminar on Chinese Nation and Hakka Culture,” organised by the Hong Kong Cross-Strait Hakka Research Center and co-hosted by the School of Communication of Hang Seng University of Hong Kong (HSUHK), was held on the morning of 14 November 2024 at HSUHK. Scholars and experts from Mainland China, Taiwan, and Hong Kong gathered to exchange ideas on various topics, including the relationship between the Chinese nation and Hakka culture, the preservation and promotion of Hakka culture in Hong Kong and overseas, and the role of Hakka culture in cross-strait exchanges.
The seminar was hosted by Dr. James Chang, Associate Dean of the School of Communication of HSUHK, as the emcee. Ms. Lam Jingjing, Chairperson of the Hong Kong Cross-Strait Hakka Research Center, delivered the opening remarks. Professor Simon Ho, President of HSUHK, presented souvenirs to the keynote speakers and honoured guests, including Mr. David Lie T. C., JP and a member of the National Committee of the Chinese People’s Political Consultative Conference from Hong Kong and Chairman of the Hong Kong-Taiwan Economic and Cultural Exchange Association; Mr. Kwok Wai Fung, President of China Review News Agency; Principle Chang Chai Sing, Vice Executive Director of the Chinese Education and Cultural Trade Promotion Association in Taiwan; and Mr. Yip Chi Ming , a member of the Guangdong Provincial Political Consultative Conference and Executive Chairman and Secretary-General of the Hong Kong Meizhou Association.
The organising committee also invited several distinguished speakers, including Professor Scarlet Tso, Dean of the School of Communication of HSUHK; Professor Chiu Kun Shuan from the East Asian Institute of Chengchi University in Taiwan; Mr. Luo Xiangxi, Editor-in-Chief of China Review News Agency; Mr. Liu Ziqi, Director of the Research Office at the Hong Kong Cross-Strait Hakka Research Center; and Professor Qiu Changgen, Director of the Institute for Cross-Strait Exchange and Regional Development at East China Normal University, as well as a special researcher at the Center for Cross-Strait Relations Research.
In addition to the aforementioned guests, representatives from the Taiwan Affairs Office of the Central People’s Government in Hong Kong, Mr. Peter Lam, MH and Chairman of the Tai Po Rural Committee in Hong Kong, Mr. Chan Siu Kuen, a member of the Meizhou Municipal Political Consultative Conference and Chief Vice Chairman of the Tai Po Rural Committee, former Township Chief Guan Jianan from Taiwan’s Tai Po, and faculty and students from the School of Communication of HSUHK, as well as from several universities in Taiwan, also attended the seminar.
