SCOM Research Seminar: The post pandemic world: Service robotic applications in the hospitality and tourism industry
On 12 January 2023, the Research Committee of the School of Communication organised a research seminar in the academic year 2022/23, titled “The post pandemic world: Service robotic applications in the hospitality and tourism industry”, for all academic faculty members and friends at Lee Quo Wei Academic Building.
The seminar featured Professor Lisa C. Wan as the keynote speaker. Professor Wan is an Associate Professor of the School of Hotel and Tourism Management and Department of Marketing at The Chinese University of Hong Kong. She is also a Co-Director of the Centre for Hospitality and Real Estate Research.
As a leading researcher in the services marketing and human-robot interaction areas, Professor Wan’s cutting-edge research is also attracted to the media, where she was interviewed by local TV broadcasting and newspaper. For example, one of her recent publications about consumer reactions to service robots during the Covid-19 pandemic (which is published on Annals of Tourism Research) has attracted around 368 local and international media pickups. This article was further disseminated to over 16,000 media around the world and more than 1,200 journalists have read the article.
During this talk, Professor Wan shared her study on the smart robot’s application in the hospitality industry and explained how robot’s appearance features affect human’s perceptions. Her findings have particularly uncovered an emerging direction with great potential in the communication area — the human-robot interaction in this post pandemic world. The audiences showed intense interest and greatly enjoyed the talk, gaining insight and knowledge in the field.
