SCOM’s Second Teaching Sharing Seminar in AY 2023/24

The School of Communication (SCOM) held its second teaching sharing seminar of AY 2023–24 on 28 March 2024. The sharing session was moderated by Ms Doris Law, Senior Lecturer, with the theme set as “Teaching Challenges and Strategies for the Practical Module after the Pandemic”.

Dr Irina Yu, Assistant Professor, Part-time lecturers including Mr Jacky Luk, Mr Stanley Yuen and Mr Sam Lam, were invited to share their teaching experience and teaching methods.

Mr Jacky Luk kicked off the sharing seminar by discussing the importance of cultivating students’ critical thinking. Real-life examples and fundamental economic concepts, such as the South Korea Doctors’ Strike, minimum wage issues, etc. were incorporated in his teaching approach, guiding students to conduct in-depth analysis with different perspectives.

Mr Stanley Yuen pointed out that the rise of AI is a major challenge in teaching. He shifted the teaching focus from emphasizing technical training to developing students’ storytelling abilities to enhance their data collection skills and learning interest. He also encouraged students to showcase their research and assignments by using ViewBoard, which boosted student participation in class.

In view of the lack of motivation and enthusiasm for learning among students, Mr Sam Lam tended to focus on inspiring their abilities in storytelling and creating interactive content in teaching website development. He also provided students with various activities, such as meditation, interacting with YouTubers, etc., which aimed to captivate students and encourage them to express themselves and to turn their experiences into stories.

Dr Irina Yu highlighted the “Information Cocoons” phenomenon, where individuals are confined to narrow information due to social media algorithms. She found that students were overly immersed in the two-dimensional world, lacking real-life social skills. By incorporating trending topics and interesting academic articles into the curriculum, students were encouraged to broaden their perspectives and enhance their critical thinking skills.

Through this sharing seminar, teachers shared valuable teaching experiences and explored creative teaching methods together. They were inspired and look forward to having more opportunities to communicate with each other in the future.
