The Centre for Communication Studies at the School of Communication, The Hang Seng University of Hong Kong, Hosts Lecture for Guangzhou Huashang College Students and Teachers

The Centre for Communication Studies at the School of Communication (SCOM), The Hang Seng University of Hong Kong (HSUHK), organized a campus visit and a lecture on 17 May for almost a hundred students and teachers from Guangzhou Huashang College. The visit allowed the students to explore the HSUHK campus as well as the facilities of SCOM, and experience first-hand the academic atmosphere and learning environment of a university in Hong Kong. The Centre arranged a lecture introducing the master’s programme at SCOM and a Q&A session to help prepare students who are interested in furthering their studies in Hong Kong.

Professor Scarlet Tso, Dean of the School of Communication, extended a warm welcome to the guests. In her introduction of the University and SCOM, Professor Tso pointed out that SCOM is a pioneer in Hong Kong to offer a curriculum that integrates journalism and communication with business and financial elements. “Students are required to take business courses like, marketing, management and accounting, etc. because a strong business foundation gives them a competitive edge in the job market as communication professionals,” she says.  Every year SCOM also arranged internship opportunities for students in leading media organization, major televisions and newspapers, public relations firms, and corporation communication department of listed companies.

She also revealed that SCOM will be launching a new Bachelor of Arts (Honours) Programme in Arts and Culture Communication in September. Through training in journalism and communication, this program aims to nurture professionals with artistic and cultural literacy as well as skills in business promotion, “I believe this programme will inject new energy into journalism and the media industry.” Professor Tso said.

The visiting students from Guangzhou Huashang College, predominantly third-year journalism and communication majors, are interested in exploring opportunities to pursue an advanced degree in Hong Kong. A briefing session on the Master’s in Strategic Communication programme was conducted by Dr James Chang, Associate Dean of the School of Communication. Dr Chang highlighted the unique features of the programme, which focuses on equipping students with cutting-edge knowledge and skills in communication strategy, data analysis, social media, crisis management, and integrity leadership. The programme aims to empower students to navigate the intricate social and political landscape with a strategic outlook and a sense of social responsibility.

Sharing her insights, Dr Irina Yu, Assistant Professor at SCOM, recounted her academic and professional journey in Hong Kong. Dr Yu emphasized that studying in Hong Kong offers students the opportunity to immerse themselves in diverse cultures and engage with peers from around the world, expanding their perspectives. Noting that most courses at the School of Communication are conducted in English, Dr Yu expressed confidence that students would significantly enhance their English proficiency within a year of study. She also encouraged students to contemplate pursuing employment opportunities in Hong Kong post-graduation to gain firsthand experience of the city’s vibrant workplace culture.

After the informative lecture, students were given a guided tour to some of SCOM’s facilities: the Cinema and Television Production Centre, Radio Broadcasting Studio, and Multimedia Training Centre.  In addition to learning about the basics of film and television production from Ms. Doris Law, radio broadcasting techniques from Dr Connie Chan, and animation production from Dr Keith Cheung, students also gained hands-on experience in anchoring and radio announcing.

Dr Fred Luk, Director of the Centre for Communication Studies, highlighted Hong Kong’s vibrant communication culture as he concluded the session. He underscored Hong Kong’s diversity and encouraged students to seize the opportunity to immerse themselves in the city’s unique cultural and academic exchange, fostering stronger ties between the two regions.
