The “2024 Youth Exchange Group between Chongqing, Hong Kong and Taiwan” organized by the Hong Kong Cross-Strait Hakka Research Center, co-organized by the School of Communication of The Hang Seng University of Hong Kong, St. John’s University in Taiwan, School for Lifelong Learning of Sichuan Fine Arts Institute, and Chinese Education, Culture and Economy Promotion Association, was successfully held in Chongqing, China from May 29 to June 1, 2024.
The School of Communication (SCOM) was represented by Professor Scarlet Tso (Dean), along with Dr. James Chang (Associate Dean), Dr. Clio Wu (Programme Director), Dr. Sammy Hu (Associate Programme Director) and a total of 7 undergraduate students.
The tour was packed with various activities, with participants from the three regions actively engaging in the “ Forum on promoting traditional Chinese culture and promoting cultural and educational exchanges among young people from Chongqing, Hong Kong and Taiwan”, visiting the graduation art exhibition of the Sichuan Fine Arts Institute, exploring the “Dazu Rock Carvings”, and touring the “Lotus Hole Art Village.”
The event provided an opportunity for SCOM members to feel the warm hospitality of Chongqing, and also experience its profound history and how art and cultural dissemination empower society.
During the above Forum, Ms. Lam Jing-Jing (Tour Leader), Professor Jiao Xing-Tao (President of Sichuan Fine Arts Institute, SFAI), Professor Xu Jìng-Jun (Associate Dean of School for Lifelong Learning, SFAI), Professor Scarlet Tso (Dean of SCOM), Dr. James Chang (Associate Dean of SCOM), Professor Tang Yen-Po (President of St. John’s University), and Mr. Chang Yung-Shan (CEO of the Chinese Education, Culture and Economy Promotion Association) delivered speeches.
In addition to introducing the development history of each institution, insightful views on enhancing understanding of Chinese history and culture were presented, as well as strengthening youngsters’ cultural exchange between the three regions.
Ms. Tang Qian-Lan, a student from our School, spoke on behalf of Hong Kong students at the forum. She expressed her heartfelt admiration for the profoundness of Chinese culture and the long history of Chongqing, hoping for more cultural exchanges among young students from the three regions.
Accompanied by Professor Xu Jing-Jun, the exchange group visited the campus of Sichuan Fine Arts Institute and admired the graduation works of students. Members were greatly impressed by the high quality of the works and the creativity of the artists. It was a great inspiration for the promotion of the upcoming “Bachelor of Arts (Honours) in Arts and Culture Communication” programme at the School of Communication.
After the fruitful exchange tour, Professor Tso remarked, “This exchange activity holds great significance, inspiring both teachers and students. Our interactions with Sichuan Fine Arts Institute have laid a solid foundation for future collaborations between the School of Communication and institutions in Chongqing and Sichuan.”
Students who joined the exchange tour also expressed delight, “We have experienced the warm hospitality of the people of Chongqing, felt the unique artistic and cultural atmosphere of the city, and enjoyed harmonious interactions with other students from Chongqing and Taiwan.”
