“Hong Kong Chess King” Himson Wong:
Hong Kong’s Chinese chess competitive internationally, urges government to invest more resources in promotion
Wong Hok Him, Himson, also known as the “Hong Kong Chess King,” has become Hong Kong’s first professional Chinese chess player and has achieved the prestigious title of “International Grandmaster” at a young age. Despite his remarkable accomplishments, he faces limited resources. During non-competition days, he takes on part-time jobs to sustain himself and cover the expenses of participating in competitions. Himson emphasizes Hong Kong’s competitive standing in Chinese chess, ranking among the top three globally excluding mainland China. Despite this, the sport lacks popularity in Hong Kong. He advocates for increased government investment in promoting Chinese chess to expand its reach, stating, “Enhanced support will attract more enthusiasts to engage in this field.”
