The School of Communication held its second Orientation session, the New Chapter Ceremony, on September 24, 2026, welcoming over 100 non-local undergraduate freshmen. Themed “Empowering a Journey to a Brighter Future,” the event aimed to help students understand university life, explore their study programmes, and learn about available resources and support. The goal was to boost their sense of belonging, help them adapt quickly, and set a strong foundation for their future.
Professor Scarlet TSO, Dean of the School of Communication, delivered an inspiring speech encouraging students to study hard and actively participate in school activities to broaden their horizons. She stressed the importance of self-expression, an open mindset, and critical thinking to better distinguish right from wrong. With communication technologies evolving rapidly, she urged students to use artificial intelligence to tell engaging stories and confidently express themselves. The School values effective communication, emphasizes building strong interpersonal connections, and is dedicated to preparing students to become outstanding communication professionals ready to engage globally. Professor TSO also reminded students to fully utilize campus resources and enjoy a vibrant campus life.
This year’s orientation focused on six key themes: “Class Attendance is Essential,” “Take IELTS Early and Reap the Benefits,” “Internships are Valuable Opportunities,” “Participate in School Activities – Broaden Your Horizons and Earn SCOM Hours,” “Your Personal Tutor is Your Strongest Support,” and “Joining the Big Family with Inclusivity.” The event emphasized the importance of regular attendance to stay eligible for exams and graduate on time. It encouraged students to register early for the IELTS and to take internships that link theory with practice to boost employability. A senior student who joined this summer’s internship program also shared their experiences and insights. Additionally, the School offers talks, seminars, exchange programs, company visits, and competitions to support students’ all-rounded development and help them earn the SCOM Hours required for internships.
Each student was assigned a Personal Tutor to provide individual guidance on academic planning, course selection, overseas exchanges, and internships. Tutors actively engaged with freshmen during the event, creating an inclusive and supportive “big family” atmosphere. Senior students shared how strong student–teacher relationships boosted their sense of belonging and enhanced their learning. The orientation ended successfully with group discussions and a tour of the School’s facilities, giving freshmen clear direction for their university journey and laying a solid foundation for their academic and personal growth, empowering them to build a bright future.
