SCOM Proactively Enhances Cooperation of GBA – MoUs Signed with Distinguished Mainland Academic Institutions

On 22 to 24 May 2023, Professor Scarlet Tso, Dean of School of Communication (SCOM), led a delegation to Guangzhou, China and visited several renowned academic institutions and units, including the School of Humanities and Communication and the School of Network Communication of Guangdong University of Finance and Economics (GDUFE), the School of Journalism and Communication and the School of Management of Jinan University (JNU), and the School of Journalism and Communication of the Guangdong University of Foreign Studies (GDUFS). Along with the visit, SCOM has signed MoUs with GDUFS and JNU to promote its cooperation in the Greater Bay Area (GBA). The visits bolstered the relationship with the three universities and will help to elevate the development of SCOM in the GBA.

 

Constructing a Long-term Arrangement for Cooperation

The MoU signing ceremony with the School of Journalism and Communication of GDUFE was officiated by Professor Tso of SCOM, The Hang Seng University of Hong Kong, Professor Hou Yingzhong, Dean of School of Journalism and Communication and Mr. Bao Shenggeng, Party Secretary of SCJ. Professor Tso and Professor Hou highlighted the boundless opportunities for cooperation in various areas including student exchanges, discipline development, academic research and international exchanges. In addition to aggressively implementing the cultivation of communication talents and discipline development in the GBA, the two Schools seek to construct a long-term arrangement for cooperation development.

 

Cooperation’s Direction: Business Communication

The visit to JNU is one of the highlights of the trip. Professor Tso signed an MoU with the School of Management of JNU, with the signing ceremony attended by Professor Li Wenjing, Dean of the School of Management and Dr. Qi Jun, Assistant Dean. Professor Li expressed his appreciation for the business communication feature of SCOM. He further commented that combining the two elements of “business” and “communication” provides an important path for the cooperation between the two Schools. The Deans of the two institutions were committed to fostering the development of global talents and strengthening the collaborative relationship between the two sides.

 

Spotlighted “Business Journalism Awards of the HSUHK”

The delegation also paid a visit to the School of Journalism and Communication of JNU, widely known as the “Journalism Academic Center in South China”. Professor Zhi Tingrong, Dean, Professor Zeng Yiguo and Professor Luo Xin, two Associate Dean of School of Journalism and Communication of JNU, welcomed the delegation from SCOM. Professor Tso believed that more cooperation would be beneficial to the growth of both institutions with the shared thoughts regarding the development of journalism and communication talents in GBA. The founding of the Business Journalism Awards of the HSUHK by SCOM was also praised by Professor Zhi Tingrong, who also stated his desire to foster cooperation between the two Schools by holding competitions, student exchanges, and academic research. The two Schools have agreed to cooperate and will sign a MoU soon.

 

Communication Technology into the Focus of Discussion

One important stop of the visit involves the School of Humanities and Communication and the School of Network Communication of GDUFE. Professor Ma Chijie, Dean, Mr. Yu Wanhong, Party Secretary, Professor Zhang Qiong and Professor Wen Yuanzhu, two Associate Dean of the School of Humanities and Communication, welcomed the delegation from SCOM. The two Schools explored prospects for cooperation in areas like teaching, academic research, student exchanges and special-designed programs. Both Deans of the two institutions recognized the importance of communication technology and suggested that social media, live streaming, talent development and academic research may become the fields of their future cooperation. Currently, the two schools are discussing specific cooperation matters and will sign a cooperation agreement under the MoU of the two universities.
