A Visit to ViuTV

In order to deepen students’ understanding of the environment and operation process of television production, the School of Communication arranged a visit to ViuTV on 7 December 2023. A group of 29 students and teachers went to the ViuTV  building located in the Kowloon Bay International Trade and Exhibition Center for the visit.

ViuTV, which started broadcasting in 2016, is a Hong Kong free-to-air television channel mainly focusing on entertainment programmes. Since its establishment, ViuTV has produced various types of programmes, such as dramas, live entertainment shows, travel shows, music shows and talk shows, and has gradually established a unique style of television production. Some of their programmes have even sparked social discussions.

Thanks to the arrangement by ViuTV’s Public Relations Department, the visit could be smoothly organised. The activity was divided into two parts. In ther first part, Mr. Chow Chung Keung, Manager of Production and Facilities Department, led the students to visit the television programme control room, the recording studio, and the office. In the control room, Mr. Chow explained the operations behind programme production and the collaboration with different departments, emphasising the importance of teamwork. When visiting the recording studio, students were fascinated by the professional photography equipment and lighting equipment, especially an expensive professional camera. Some students could not wait to try operating it and experience what it is like to be a professional photographer. Afterwards, the students were taken to another shooting location. As there was a programme being recorded, the students could only observe the programme production process through the glass window. Finally, everyone went to the office on the 8th floor to learn about the working environments of different departments.

After visiting the studios and offices, ViuTV’s Public Relations Department arranged a sharing session for the students as the second part of the visit programme. Mr. Yu Chun Hon, an editor, introduced the work and job requirements of his department. Mr. Yu mentioned that students interested in television production could apply for a job there after graduation. However, he stressed that the most important qualities required would be diligence and passion for programme production. Some interested students responded by asking many questions about job applications, thus heating up the interaction session.  Finally, the teachers encouraged the students to equip themselves well, observe people and things around them, think more, and analyze more, as these would be beneficial to their development of creative careers in the future.

The visit did not only allowed the students to understand the television production environment as well as the operation process more, but it also provided them with the opportunity to appreciate the operation of television media firsthand. It is believed that such learning experience will enhance students’ competitiveness in the future market.
